Who can apply for internships?

Applicants must be currently admitted or enrolled in an accredited college or university or have completed their bachelor’s or master’s degree.

As an intern, what types of projects would I work on?

Scholars are assigned to specific projects and are guided by a scientific or technical mentor. Projects are carefully selected to complement students’ education and skills. Assignments span a broad range of expertise and topics, including computational modeling, computational biology, laser control systems, computer security, computer networking, programming environments, parallel computing, numerical methods, visualization, and data mining.

How do I know if my application has been selected?

You will be contacted by a mentor and the Scholar Program administrative team to begin the hiring process.

When do you start selecting interns for the Summer Internship Program?

We start reviewing resumes and selecting students as early as the fall. However, the bulk of our students are selected in the January/February timeframe.

How long is the hiring process once I have been selected?

The process can be anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks from the time you are selected by a mentor and submit a formal employment application with LLNL. The timeframe for international students can be longer.

How many interns do you hire?

Nearly 200 students participated in the most recent summer session. A considerable portion of students plan to return for another summer based on their experience here.

What is the pay like?

The pay is very competitive with industry and is generally more than an academic internship. We use an academic step structure to determine a student’s appropriate salary.

How long do internships last?

Internships typically last 10–12 weeks, but they can be as brief as 8 weeks or continue through the academic year.

What are the typical hours of a work day and are they flexible?

Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Computing does offer alternative work schedules, but they are approved on a case-by-case basis by your supervisor.

Are there fun events/activities planned for students?

There are many events planned for students. We plan seminars, tours, social gatherings, and networking opportunities. These events generally occur during the summer, when the most students are at the Laboratory.

How might I find housing?

We are always exploring more housing options for our students. Some suggestions that we give our future students are to view the housing options on the LLNL Students site and sites such as Craigslist. Former LLNL students have found that these are the most effective options. Renting a room is recommended, as it is less expensive and usually utilities (e.g., power, gas, Internet) and sometimes furniture is included. Some students have also stayed at the Extended Stay America in Livermore.

How do I get from the airport to the Livermore area?

Besides ride-sharing services, several shuttle companies are available, such as East Bay Connection. More transportation information is available on the LLNL Students site.

What is the attire like at the Lab?

Plan to wear similar clothing to what you would wear to work in a university setting.

Is public transportation available to/from the Lab?

Should I drive or fly?

Access to a car is ideal for exploring the area and getting to and from work, however, it isn’t necessary. There are carpools, public transportation, and other options. Please note that this topic will be discussed during the offer process.

Are there gyms/pools/tracks/basketball courts in the area?

The Lab offers many options for employees to engage in healthy lifestyle activities. LLNL has gyms, basketball courts, and volleyball courts on site, and a pool is located down the street.
